The York Region Sci-Tech Fair (YRSTF), in association with York University, once again hosted teams of young talent from across York Region at its 20th annual event, held April 4-9, 2022 in a virtual format.

This year, York Catholic competitors prevailed with outstanding medal performances, a host of special awards and numerous honourable mention designations. Innovative projects focused on a wide range of ideas including:  novel uses for natural waste products, eye tracking using computer vision for the physically disabled, cancer analysis using artificial neural networks, and the challenge of using voice recognition in the era of Covid masking.

The YRSTF provides students with an opportunity to realize the thrill of developing and displaying their work for expert and peer review, while growing in confidence as innovators and individuals.  Pierre Tacchino, Science Teacher at St. Theresa of Lisieux CHS  / Ethics & YCDSB Liaison Committee Member for the event commented:

“I am extremely proud of our YCDSB team, and of all participants from across York Region. I would like to congratulate all participants and thank their parents, supervisors and teachers for their tireless support.  The originality, quality and scientific process demonstrated in their projects was exceptional, and made for a very competitive and exciting YRSTF ‘22.  It was wonderful to learn about many original projects geared towards helping others and our environment.  Through their projects, our YCDSB students have demonstrated many virtues that are fundamental to our Catholic Faith and teaching.”

Over the years, an exciting roster of student talent has emerged at the YRSTF, distinguishing York Region in the eyes of the science and technology community across Canada, and around the world.
