Who was St. Edward?

St. Edward, also known as Edward the Confessor, was a king who lived in England during the 11th century. He was born in 1003 and was part of the royal family. From a young age, he displayed a deep devotion to God and lived a religious life. St. Edward became the King of England in 1042, ruling with fairness and compassion. He was known for his kindness, wisdom and sense of justice, earning the nickname “the Confessor” because of his strong Christian faith and his dedication to spreading the Gospel.

St. Edward’s reign was marked by a period of peace and stability in England. He sought to build strong ties with the Church and promote religious harmony. Throughout his rule, he remained humble and committed to the welfare of his people. He was deeply loved by his subjects, who saw him as a true servant-leader.

After his death in 1066, many people reported miracles attributed to his intercession, and his reputation for holiness grew. His body was laid to rest in Westminster Abbey, a significant place of worship in London. Over time, stories of his holiness, devotion and sanctity spread, and people began to worship him as a saint.

St. Edward’s sainthood was officially recognized by the Catholic Church in 1161 when he was canonized by Pope Alexander III. He is celebrated as a saint for his virtuous and righteous life, his dedication to God, and his exemplary rule as a king. He is the only King of England to be canonized by the Catholic Church.

St. Edward continues to be honoured and admired as a model of Christian virtue, inspiring people to follow his path of faith, humility and goodness.
