This summer, the York Catholic District School Board’s Mental Health team, together with incredible community partners, created unforgettable opportunities for children and youth to learn, grow and shine. From building leadership skills to discovering new friendships, our summer camps offered safe, faith-filled spaces where students could explore who they are and who God is calling them to be.
Lead the Way! Summer Leadership Camp
Leading with Courage and Confidence
Last month, students had the exciting opportunity to participate in two sessions of our “Lead the Way!” Summer Camp, in collaboration with The Empowerment Project, and what an incredible two weeks it was!
Over five days, campers built leadership, communication and stress-management skills through games, creative projects, team challenges and mindfulness activities. Each day ended with meaningful reflection, empowering students to head back to school with confidence, courage and calm.
The week wrapped up with an adventurous day of Treetop Trekking at Bruce’s Mill Conservation Park, where campers put their new skills to the test. The smiles on their faces said it all!
We are so proud of these courageous young leaders and can’t wait to see them continue to shine this school year.
Newcomer Youth Summer Camps
Empowering Youth and Building Community
In August, YCDSB partnered with Common Compass to offer a dynamic two-week camp experience at one of our Richmond Hill schools.
The first week focused on leadership development for newcomer teens, who explored community building, mental health awareness and resilience. Each participant received a $500 honorarium as a recognition of their commitment, a meaningful way to encourage them to continue using their gifts.
During the second week, these teens became mentors for younger campers (ages 8–13), guiding them through a week filled with outdoor games, arts & crafts and community-building activities. Together, campers and mentors created a warm, welcoming environment where everyone felt they belonged.
This unique program not only built confidence and leadership skills, but also fostered lasting friendships and a stronger Catholic community.
Fit Body, Fit Mind Camp
Growing Stronger – Together
Our YCDSB Occupational Therapy team also hosted a “Fit Body, Fit Mind” Camp this summer, focusing on self-confidence, teamwork and social connection.
Campers enjoyed arts & crafts, cooking, a fun movie outing and even had the chance to meet exotic animals. They challenged themselves with adapted hockey, balloon toss games and rock climbing, celebrating every success, big or small.
The result? New friendships, big smiles and memories that will last long after summer ends.
Girls Inc. Summer Camps
Inspiring Girls to Be Strong, Smart, and Bold
This summer, we were blessed to host two incredible camps in partnership with Girls Inc. of York Region.
Each camp was filled with arts & crafts, mental and physical wellness activities and plenty of outdoor adventures. Campers strengthened teamwork, leadership and self-care skills, and their smiles said it all!
Both camps were a tremendous success, leaving participants with lasting memories, new friendships and a renewed sense of confidence.
Looking Ahead with Gratitude
The success of these programs is a testament to the dedication of our Mental Health and Occupational Therapy teams, our community partners and the families who encouraged their children to participate.
As we begin a new school year, we celebrate the incredible youth who took part in these camps, stepping out of their comfort zones, building new skills and discovering just how capable and resilient they truly are.
We cannot wait to see how these young leaders continue to bless their schools and communities with courage, compassion and faith. And yes, we are already looking forward to next summer and the many opportunities that could take place.
