What is Terry Fox Day?
Terry Fox Day is observed in Canada to honour the life and legacy of Terry Fox, a Canadian athlete and cancer research advocate. It is celebrated on the second Sunday in September, close to the anniversary of Terry’s Marathon of Hope.
Terry Fox was a young athlete who, at the age of 18, was diagnosed with bone cancer and as a result, had his right leg amputated. In 1980, with a prosthetic leg, he embarked on a cross-country run, known as the Marathon of Hope, to raise funds and awareness for cancer research. Terry’s mission captivated the nation as he ran the equivalent of a marathon every day, covering over 5,000 kilometers (3,100 miles).
Despite facing immense challenges, Terry’s determination and courage inspired millions of Canadians, as well as people from all around the world. He became a symbol of hope, resilience and the power of one person’s ability to make a difference. Sadly, Terry had to end his run just outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario, when the cancer spread to his lungs. He passed away in 1981 at the age of 22.
Terry Fox’s legacy continues to inspire generations. His selfless dedication and perseverance in finding a cure for cancer led to the establishment of the Terry Fox Foundation. This foundation raises funds for cancer research through annual Terry Fox Runs, held in communities across Canada and in various parts of the world. The YCDSB alone has raised over $4.5 million through the years as part of their commitment to the Terry Fox Foundation and vital cancer research.
On Terry Fox Day, everyone comes together to remember Terry’s incredible journey and the impact he made in the fight against cancer. The day is marked by Terry Fox Runs, where people of all ages and abilities participate in walks, runs or other events to raise funds and awareness for cancer research. These events embody Terry’s spirit of determination, compassion and the desire to make a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer.
Terry Fox Day serves as a reminder of the ongoing battle against cancer and the importance of research and funding in finding a cure. It honours Terry’s legacy by encouraging individuals to carry forward his message of hope, resilience and never giving up in the face of adversity. Through their participation in Terry Fox Runs, communities contribute to the ongoing fight against cancer and continue to support the cause that Terry held dear to his heart.
