New High Performer Athlete Program to Open in Aurora

Applications will soon be accepted for an exciting new program in York Region that will help elite student-athletes excel in both their academic and athletic lives by providing excellent support, flexibility and facilities, all within a publicly-funded school.

In September 2023, St. Maximilian Kolbe CHS will open the York Catholic District School Board’s second High Performer Athlete program (HPA). The program will support elite student-athletes by providing flexible schedules and allowing students to earn Phys Ed credits while training.

HPA applications open on Monday, November 21, 2022. Interested families can complete an online application package on the school website: smkh.ycdsb.ca. Completed application packages are due December 16, 2022. To be enrolled in the HPA, student-athletes must participate in provincial, national or international competition, and be involved in at least 15 hours per week of training. Some consideration will be made for students who compete at the regional level. HPA coordinators will work with coaches, trainers and organizations to ensure the highest level of support is afforded to our student-athletes.

St. Maximilian Kolbe CHS will host an open house on Tuesday, November 29, 2022 at 6 p.m. for grade 8 students and their families who are interested in learning more about the HPA program. The open house will take place in the school gymnasium. St. Maximilian Kolbe CHS is located at 278 Wellington St. E., Aurora.

“Our school community couldn’t be prouder to host the High Performer Athlete program,” said Peter Parente, principal of St. Maximillian Kolbe CHS. “Our school has a long tradition of supporting student athletes and historically, has offered such a wide variety of athletic and co-curricular experiences for our students. Our teams have experienced much success in YRAA and OFSAA sanctioned events and have competed internationally. We have dedicated teacher coaches who inspire our students to achieve excellence in the classroom and on the playing field. It just makes sense to have an HPA program here. We know what exceptional student-athletes need and we can provide it.”

Applicants from outside of the school’s boundaries and outside of York Region are welcome, but transportation will not be provided.

St. Maximilian Kolbe CHS, located in downtown Aurora, boasts an artificial turf sports field, three gymnasiums, a full track and a state-of-the-art fitness room. The school is known for its strong academics with a wide variety of learning options and co-curricular activities.
