St. Gregory the Great CA duct tapes their principal to the wall to raise more than $20,000

“The proof of love is in the works.” – St. Gregory the Great.

Who wouldn’t pass up the opportunity to duct tape their principal to the wall and donate to a great cause at the same time?

Since the beginning of the school year, students and staff at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Academy were seeking creative ways to raise funds in support of renovations to their library and chapel, and other charitable causes. The Luke 4:18 Committee and Student Government, made up of Grades 6 to 8 students, led many of the fundraising initiatives with the support of its Catholic School Council, including organizing a Halloween Spook-a-thon, cookie sales and more.

Recently, the school came up with a fun idea to sell $1 per piece of duct tape to tape their Principal, Vince Galea, to the wall. Almost 15 rolls of duct tape later, the school raised more than $1,500.

Since the beginning of the year, students and staff have raised more than $20,000 for a wide variety of causes, including:

$12,000 for renovation of the school library and chapel
$1,400 for ShareLife Canada
$650 for the Hospital for Sick Children
$5,300 for the Terry Fox Foundation
$300 to families in need in their community
$500 for donations through their Luke 4:18 committee
130 pairs of pyjamas for their local parish, Clare of Assisi
Eight barrels of food for the Vaughan Food Bank

They also participated in a number of social justice initiatives such as Bag to School, the Shoe Box Project, and Sweater Day.

“I am so proud of our students and staff for rallying together. I also have to give a special thank you to the generosity of our school community. This is truly a giving community and we are so blessed,” said Vince Galea, principal at St. Gregory the Great. “The funds for the library will help modernize the space for our 21st century learners where they can continue to learn and grow.”
