The York Catholic District School Board and The Council for Exceptional Children, York Region Chapter 543, would like to acknowledge and congratulate all student and adult recipients of the 2020 Yes I Can Awards.
The Yes I Can Awards recognize the accomplishments of exceptional students who have made significant achievements in the categories of School & Community, Academics, Arts, Athletics, Self-Advocacy, Technology and Transition. This year, more than 60 student winners from York Catholic were recognized for making a lasting impact on their nominators and school communities.
The Catholic Education Centre (CEC) also recognizes adults who have given outstanding service to The Council for Exceptional Children or directly to exceptional children and youth in the categories of President’s Award, Educational Leader, Teacher of the Year, Paraprofessional of the Year, Outstanding Parent, Outstanding Business and a Sibling Story recognition.
York Catholic would like to congratulate the following adult winners for their outstanding work and commitment to supporting our exceptional students:
- Ms. Azzarelli, a parent from Brother Andre CHS, received the Outstanding Parent award for being an exceptionally supportive parent who provided her daughter with experiences to gain independence in school and within the Markham community.
- Josie Fragnelli received the President’s Award for her measurable impact through her initiatives and vision as the Student Services Coordinator for the elementary panel.
- Fraktals in Aurora received the Outstanding Business award for their openness and willingness to differentiate tasks for a York Catholic student that enabled him to bloom in his environment and shine in using his specific skills.
- Luisa Grisonich and Rosella DiPede jointly received the Teacher of the Year award for going above and beyond through the immense care and compassion for students.
- Shanahan Nagendran, a student at Brother Andre CHS, received the Sibling Recognition award for being kind, understanding and an excellent role model and leader for his peers. He continually engages his peers to join in activities involving special needs students.
- Nancy Rella received the Paraprofessional of the Year award for her passion and excitement in helping students reach their full potential which is evident in her “endless efforts” to ensure students are prepared for the complexities inherent in their social environments.
- Connie Weber, York Catholic’s Vision Program Teacher, received the Educational Leader of the Year Award for her depth and knowledge of students with visual impairments and the specialized accommodations they require.
Each year, YCDSB holds an annual ceremony at the CEC to recognize York Catholic recipients. Due to COVID-19, the recognition has been moved online. Congratulations again to all the recipients!
