At the York Catholic District School Board (YCDSB), we are committed to fostering a deep understanding and appreciation of the diverse histories, cultures and experiences of Indigenous Peoples in Canada. As we acknowledge National Truth and Reconciliation Week (September 23-30, 2024), we invite our entire community—students, staff and families – to reflect on the profound importance of this week, which centers on acknowledging and addressing the legacy of residential schools and advancing reconciliation efforts.
Why National Truth and Reconciliation Week Matters
National Truth and Reconciliation Week is an opportunity for all Canadians to come together and learn about the ongoing impact of the residential school system on Indigenous Peoples. This week is not only about educating ourselves but also taking actionable steps toward healing and reconciliation.
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) published 94 Calls to Action, urging governments, organizations and individuals to recognize the ongoing harm done to Indigenous communities and commit to meaningful change. These Calls to Action serve as a blueprint for a reconciled relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians, and as a school board, YCDSB is dedicated to working in harmony with these principles.
YCDSB’s Commitment to Reconciliation
At YCDSB, we integrate Indigenous perspectives into our curriculum, foster inclusive spaces for all students and promote educational activities that deepen our understanding of the history and legacy of residential schools. This, in turn, seeks to build bridges between communities and contribute to the ongoing work of truth and reconciliation.
During National Truth and Reconciliation Week, we will engage in meaningful conversations, events and learning opportunities to honour the survivors of residential schools, their families and the generations impacted by this painful chapter in Canadian history.
What Can You Do?
We encourage all members of our YCDSB community to take the time to educate themselves and reflect on the TRC’s Calls to Action.
Here are some ways you can get involved:
- Attend Local Events: Check for events organized by local Indigenous communities or educational institutions that focus on truth and reconciliation.
- Learn More About the TRC: Visit the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s website to explore the 94 Calls to Action and learn more about the history of residential schools.
- Government of Canada’s Efforts: Stay informed about the Government of Canada’s ongoing work toward reconciliation by visiting their dedicated Truth and Reconciliation page.
- Wear Orange: On Orange Shirt Day (September 30), show your support for survivors by wearing an orange shirt and raising awareness about the residential school system.
Moving Forward Together
As we recognize National Truth and Reconciliation Week, we acknowledge that the journey toward reconciliation is ongoing. At YCDSB, we remain committed to supporting our students, staff and families as we move forward together, informed by the lessons of the past and motivated by the hope of a reconciled future.
Let us honour this week by taking concrete actions to promote understanding, healing and unity within our communities. Together, we can contribute to a brighter future, one where every child matters.
