NOMINEE for February's Future Goals MOST VALUABLE TEACHER PRESENTED BY SAP

We wish to call on everyone in the York Catholic District School Board community to support Diana Palumbo, a grade 5 teacher at St. Mary of the Angels CES, as she vies for the NHL/NHLPA’s Future Goals Most Valuable Teacher Award!

Ms. Palumbo is one of only 20 teachers selected for this honour in North America and the only teacher nominated in Ontario.

The teacher with the most votes throughout the month will win an NHL Club jersey and a $10,000 donation towards Environmental Sustainability Resources for their school.

Throughout February, students and parents can visit NHL.com/MVT and vote once a day, every day, for Ms. Palumbo.

“I am truly honoured and thrilled to be nominated for February’s NHL/NHLPA Most Valuable Teacher!” said Ms. Palumbo. “As one of 20 teachers being considered in North America, I am definitely excited at the thought of winning a $10,000 grant towards Environmental Sustainability Resources from SAP and, more importantly, knowing that all the students in the school will benefit. I LOVE what I do, and this nomination is just the icing on an already rewarding and fulfilling vocation.”

This is the fifth year for the NHL & NHLPA Future Goals Most Valuable Teacher Program presented by SAP. Over three months (January, February and March), 60 dynamic teachers will be nominated, with just twenty being highlighted monthly. The three winners from each of the three-month competitions will then be entered into a finalist vote, which will take place in May. The grand prize winner, announced in May, will receive an additional $20,000 for an Environmental Sustainability grant for their school.

Teachers are one of the most important influences in a child’s life. Dedicated and hard-working educators impart knowledge, encourage character-building opportunities, and teach values that shape responsible global citizens. Through this competition, the NHL, NHLPA, and SAP aim to acknowledge and salute teachers for their vital role in children’s lives and their communities.

Future Goals Hockey Scholar is a free online program that uses hockey to teach STEM concepts, inspiring boys and girls to develop their STEM-based skills in a fun and engaging way. Nearly 4 million students at more than 22,100 schools have received 7.58 million hours of learning through Future Goals since 2014.

Ms. Palumbo says, “I truly appreciate the dynamic, interactive lessons that EVERFI provides for my students, which not only keep them engaged while teaching them real-world skills but also allow me to observe them as they learn to navigate the lessons and interact with their classmates. One of many important STEM areas of study is geometry – whether a bank pass off the sideboard to a teammate or to “dump” in the opposition’s zone, being able to see and calculate angles is as important in hockey as it is life.”

EVERFI digital resources are FREE and are presented as gamified, curriculum-aligned lessons that bring to life the critical skills students need for personal and educational success. Researched and developed by experts in each field, students can learn about topics in STEM, Health & Wellness, Social Emotional Learning, Financial Education, Digital Literacy and more.

“Forward-thinking STEM-based classes empower and inspire young minds to shape the future of technology and the role educators play in this process. Equipping students with the necessary skills to thrive in a world where the digital and green economy are becoming paramount,” said Amy Schulz, senior director of global sponsorships at SAP. “We’re proud to continue our long-standing support of this program by providing resources to students and teachers to embrace the next generation of leaders and drive long-term social impact.”

We hope you will join us in congratulating Ms. Palumbo and supporting her by voting for her online as often as possible.
