Grade 12 students, Emma Mucci and Joseph Perera, from St. Elizabeth Catholic High School’s Sports and Entertainment University Marketing class, not only placed first overall at the Central Ontario Junior Achievement (JA) Titan Competition, but they also became the first York Catholic District School Board students to participate and win the title.
Grade 10 students from St. Elizabeth also placed fifth in the competition.
More than 1,200 students from across Central Ontario competed in the JA Titan Challenge, a business strategy competition utilizing an online, interactive business simulation. The competition puts students’ business knowledge, creativity and leadership skills to the test.
“It’s so fun to watch them apply their business knowledge into everyday life simulations such as the JA Titan Challenge,” said Laila Mastrotto, teacher at St. Elizabeth. “As a business teacher, my goal is to create a classroom that merges learning with the outside world, a type of virtual learning enhancement to their textbooks. I am so proud of all our students. This is a testament to their hard work.”
As winners of the competition, Mucci and Perera were awarded a $500 post-secondary scholarship and the title, JA Titan Challenge Champion.
“Our Marketing class’ motto is ‘It’s not enough to stand up – you must stand out,’ and we did. As first time competitors, it was such a great feeling to put our school on the leaderboard,” said Mucci and Perera. “We would like to thank JA Titan advisors, Janet and Lesley, our parents and Ms. Mastrotto for their guidance and support.”
Mucci has hopes to utilize her creativity and continue her business studies at McMaster University.
When asked what he hopes to achieve in his post-secondary education, Perera said he intends to pursue social sciences in university.
