Akoma comes from the Asante of present day Ghana. It is an Adinkra symbol that symbolizes endurance and understanding, and can be recognized as the modern day standard heart. Its’ literal meaning is “the heart” and represents love, unity, endurance, patience, tolerance, goodwill, and faithfulness.

The AKOMA camp is founded on an African Proverb that states; “it takes a village to raise a child”. This message brings to the forefront the concept that it takes many people (“the village”) to ensure that each student attains success. Guided by Gospel Values and Catholic Virtues, Akoma aims to create an authentic experience for Black students in the YCDSB, where students are given the opportunities, tools, resources and sense of safety they need in order to further explore the concept Black is Beautiful, and realize their hopes and dreams. This requires an
environment where children’s voices are taken seriously and multiple people (the “villagers”) including family members, teachers, professionals, community members and policy makers, work together to bring this vision to fruition.
The Akoma program aims to combine
an authentic Black experience with Post-Covid Recovery Efforts that focus on Math, Literacy and Fundamental Learning Skills.
Classes run from 8:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.,
