On Monday, Nov. 11, students and staff across the York Catholic District School Board (YCDSB) paid tribute to Canadian veterans, and those who continue to serve, with special assemblies and activities that featured artwork installations, members of the Canadian Armed Forces, dramatic performances, and more.
Cardinal Carter Catholic High School
At Cardinal Carter Catholic High School, staff and students heard from their very own Grade 12 student, Emiliano Laing, a reservist with the Canadian Armed Forces. Recognizing this is the fifth anniversary of the end of the war in Afghanistan, Emiliano gave an inspiring and heartfelt speech, sharing the stories of soldiers who are remembered for their unflinching bravery and commitment to their fellow comrades and their country.

Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Elementary School
Students and staff at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Elementary School welcomed Lieutenant-Colonel Frank D. Lamie, a commanding officer in The Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada, as he shared his experiences training in the army and serving his country abroad. He delivered important messages about standing up to bullies and to inspire peace in the world.

St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic High School
At St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic High School, drama, choir and dance students performed commemorative pieces to honour veterans, soldiers and their families. The performances shared messages of hope and reflected on their courage during times of war. At the school’s common area, students created a large, abstract poppy comprised of mini poppies.

St. Theresa of Lisieux Catholic High School
Grade 12 drama students at St. Theresa of Lisieux Catholic High School put on a powerful and moving performance piece to commemorate the soldiers that fought for their country’s freedom. Their performance honoured the many brave men and women that fought and continue to fight for our country, and those who stood united and strong as they wait for their loved ones to return home. Students also created a Hallway of Heroes that feature large art installations and soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their country.

York Catholic staff at the CEC also gathered for a Remembrance Day service. At the event, staff shared readings, prayers and viewed a memorial display of photos and stories of family members who served in the Canadian Armed Forces.
