Last month, York Catholic students members of Prospective Medical Professionals hosted PuMP+, their first science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fair at the Richmond Hill Centre of Performing Arts. The event provided students with the opportunity to partake in STEM activities, speak with industry professionals and learn about the many career pathways available to them.
The Prospective Medical Professionals is a registered federal youth non-profit organization dedicated to helping aspiring high school students connect to health sciences opportunities. The event team is made up of high school students from the York Catholic, York Region, Peel and Toronto district school boards.
“We were excited to host PuMP+ for the first time. Our team has been working towards this for a long time. We hope it will make opportunities in STEM more accessible to all high school students,” said Dhruv Dhall, Grade 10 student at St. Theresa of Lisieux CHS.
At the event, students explored booths that featured STEM institutes, non-profits, universities and summer programs from renown institutes, including the University of Toronto and Sanofi Biogenius.
“We recognize that STEM encompasses the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics which are all very popular pathways being considered by high school students. We hope that by hosting this event, students will have the opportunity to discover more about specific disciplines,” said Chabrina Gnanaseelan, Grade 10 student at St. Brother André CHS.
