York Catholic Teacher Wins Governor General’s Award

Cynthia Bettio, Department Head of Canadian and World Studies at Our Lady Queen of the World Catholic Academy, is being celebrated for her outstanding work in teaching history. Bettio has been honoured with the 2022 Governor General’s History Award for Excellence in Teaching for a project that engaged her students in deep and innovative thinking about history.

Her year-long project encouraged students to investigate Canadian history from 1914 to the present from the perspective of traditionally underrepresented groups. Students conducted rigorous research to highlight the significance of people and events who are not often considered in the traditional Canadian history narrative. Then, with the help of the partner, STEM Minds, that research was coded into a game that makes the information compelling and accessible to others.

In a recent interview, Bettio said:

I think the inspiration for me was that I no longer wanted to teach this course from the prevailing dominant narrative; instead, I chose to explore some of the non-dominant narratives. I am very passionate and have dedicated much of my professional and personal career and life to social justice issues.

Bettio is known for her pedagogical knowledge, leadership and creativity. York Catholic DSB is fortunate to have excellent teachers such as Cynthia Bettio. At the November 29, 2022, YCDSB Board Meeting, Trustees and staff recognized Bettio for her outstanding achievements.

Congratulations, Ms. Bettio, from everyone at the York Catholic District School Board!
