World Down Syndrome Day is March 21

World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) is celebrated annual on March 21 around the world. It is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate people with Down Syndrome. In 2012, the United Nations declared March 21 – 3-21 as World Down Syndrome Day, because this date signifies the uniqueness of the triplication of the 21st chromosome which causes Down Syndrome. This day was also declared Ontario Down Syndrome Day by the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in 2016.

The York Catholic District School Board is proud to support the work of the Down Syndrome Association of York Region (DSAYR), which promotes the awareness of the abilities of people with Down Syndrome within our school system. This year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, DSAYR has shared a variety of videos and virtual activities so our York Catholic community can participate and learn more about Down Syndrome. One such event is encouraging students and staff to wear mismatched socks for a day as part of a world-wide theme of “loving differences.” #wdsd2021 #LotsofSocks
